Lucca still retains the charm of a small and ancient Italian city-state. Thanks to its shrewd political policy throughout the years, Lucca has managed to hold on to its independence and freedom. Having miraculously escaped the devastation of war, today it boasts one of the most extraordinary Tuscan art heritages. The imposing tree-lined Renaissance Walls which totally enclose the city, the maze of medieval streets flanked by towers and elegant boutiques, the enchanting Romanesque churches and bright inviting squares captivate the visitor who remains awestruck by such unexpected beauty. The historical centre, now a pedestrian area, plunges the visitor back in time and provides the perfect setting to savour old world charm, where time and space take on a new dimension, no longer found in today’s modern cities.

The tour begins in the very central Piazza San Michele in Foro, characterized by the Romanesque church of the same name. You will head to Piazza Napoleone, or as the people of Lucca call it, Piazza Grande, from where you can admire the Ducal Palace, dating from the Neoclassical period, and the Teatro del Giglio, one of the oldest public theaters in Italy.
You will then discover the majestic Cathedral of San Martino, a key destination for medieval pilgrims who passed through here to venerate the image of Christ's "Holy Face," still a symbol of the city. Inside the sacristy, you can admire the famous sarcophagus of Ilaria del Carretto, created by Jacopo della Quercia.
Passing through the city's characteristic medieval streets, including the Via degli Antiquari and the elegant Via Fillungo, you will find yourself in Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, built on the remains of the ancient Roman arena, one of the most picturesque places in the city. We will then pass by the famous Guinigi Tower, unique for it’s striking roof garden. After admiring the stunning façade of the Basilica San Frediano, one of the oldest churches in the city, you will climb the Renaissance Walls, once a defense against the enemy and now a public park to be explored on foot, by bicycle or by carriage.
