The Walls of Lucca are a unique reality, as far as European city planning and architecture are concerned. Built during the Renaissance, today, they are a leading example of Italian fortification. The Walls have been turned into a large public park consisting of 96 hectares of green space, which surrounds and delineates the historical centre, and is for pedestrian use only. The tree-lined walkway is 4.2 km long flanked by different varieties of trees, and is suitable for strolling, jogging, or riding bikes.
During this tour, you will follow a route which moves above and below the Walls - to discover the interiors of some of the bastions restored thanks to the City of Lucca and the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca.
Visiting them is like entering the "bowels" of the Walls of Lucca, although never actually used for defensive purposes. You will discover the immense and spectacular brick vaults of the galleries, built with the main purpose of hiding the heavy bronze cannons, and understand the evolution of military engineering in Italy from the 13th to the 17th century.
