The town of Aquilea developed and grew on the Morian hills. The first settlement was founded by St. Leonard (patron saint of the village) on the slopes of the mountain that was later called Castellaccio. Subsequently, around 1400, a small stronghold was built with a fortified village with three towers that were used for signaling to and from Lucca. Then the decline and the stones of the stronghold were used for the construction of the houses below until there remained a tower and a wing this was later converted into a church. In 1944, given its dominant point on the Lucca plain, the area was fortified and militarized by the German army as a command and control outpost of the Gothic Line in Lucca. It was bombed on September 24, 1944, and today it remains as it was then.
You will visit the area, via a walking trail, together with a local guide. At the end of the walk, you will stop at a local winery for a snack with tasting of bruschetta with Aquilea oil and a tasting of Aquilea honey, all paired with a good glass of local wine.

Comitato paesano di Aquilea
We are an association that organizes events mainly for gastronomic purposes to promote "our" soup and the country's excellent products. In fact, in the village of Aquilea, there are producers of oil, wine and honey. Our soup has been entered in the regional PAT (traditional food product) register, included in the Tuscan Showcase products and we can boast that we have received the municipal recognition of "Soup Country." We are also involved in landscape enhancement, with guided tours of our territory and the organization of the historical re-enactment of the Battle of the Castellaccio (last week of September). In the ecological field we are involved in the reclamation of the territory from garbage dumping and the Bolognana stream, included in the 'regional list of custodian growers of rare plants: we have in our custody very rare plants of peach cultivar delfo, cherry calotte, nottoli and papalona.
